Alibaba Cloud's first open-weights LLMs, Qwen-7B base and chat, released on Hugging Face after the April 2023 Tongyi Qianwen beta.

Moves the Tongyi Qianwen model line from a chat beta to downloadable weights (Tongyi Qianwen license). Qwen-14B followed on 2023-09-24 and Qwen-72B plus 1.8B on 2023-11-30, establishing the open-weights Qwen strategy.

Date is Hugging Face repo creation (2023-08-03 UTC). The Qwen Technical Report (arXiv 2309.16609, 2023-09-28, 48 authors) describes Qwen base and Qwen-Chat models, including RLHF-tuned chat with tool-use and code-interpreter ability, and Alibaba's 2024-01-23 blog recounts Qwen-7B as the start of its open-source journey. The April 2023 beta and September 2023 public release (after regulatory clearance) are per Wikipedia, which I did not verify against a primary source.
