Advisor tool (advisor strategy)
The advisor tool lets a cheap Sonnet or Haiku executor consult Opus mid-task, bringing near-Opus quality at near-Sonnet cost in a one-line API change.
Formalizes a pattern developers had converged on. The executor runs the task end to end and calls a stronger advisor only at decisions it cannot make. Public beta on the Claude Platform; later versions add a max_tokens limit and Managed Agents advisor models.
