Kai-Fu Lee's 01.AI opened Yi-34B, claimed first among open models on the Hugging Face Open LLM Leaderboard and C-Eval as of November 2023.
Bilingual Chinese-English 6B and 34B base models trained on 3.1T tokens, with 200K-context versions following on 2023-11-05 and Yi-VL in January 2024. Success credited to data engineering over architecture.
